Description:
Original deer hide warp with fiber cordage. Circa: 1670 (probably 18th century [Hamell, G. R.; personal communications].Collected by Harriet Converse from Chief Moses Stacy (Caughnawaga). Suggested to be a peace belt between the Caughnawaga and the Iroquois. However, the description in the NMAI reported stated that the belt was smeared with vermillion, still visible by the red staining on the tomahawk image which definitely indicated it was a war belt not a peace belt as claimed by Converse .Wampum woven with cordage on leather. Peace Tomahawk belt for Magistracy (Moses Stacy) Chief of the Caughnawaga (1670). [National Museum]Purchased from Harriet M. Converse, who collected it from Moses Stacy, at Kahnawake, in 1906.
